STORYLINE:

The International Tea Day is observed every year on May 21.

In Nairobi, the Kenyan capital, there are Chinese tea shops that are drawing the attention of the locals.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BRIAN KARIUKI, Nairobi resident
"I first had Chinese tea in 2017. It has a very distinct taste. It's green, most of the time it's green. And I love how the Chinese make it, because they have tables designed for it. So they normally have cups, and the machine itself is able to heat the water. I would love for everybody to just experience how they do it, because it's a culture thing."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): MERCY WAMBUI, Nairobi resident
"I do love Chinese cha (tea). They call it cha (tea). I do love their green tea especially because the health benefits of green tea are ok, because it speeds up the metabolism if you are willing to lose weight."

Many Kenyans are discovering different types of Chinese tea, and enjoying it in different ways.

Charity Wanja has been working as a manager at a Chinese bubble tea shop for two years. She told Xinhua they sell more than 50 cups of different Chinese teas in one day.

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): CHARITY WANJA, Manager, Wen Excellence tea shop
"I have worked here for a period of two years now. Chinese milk tea has been so popular in Kenya, and not just in Kenya, so many people from other countries have been coming to get a taste of our tea. They have really liked it, most especially the bubble tea."

SOUNDBITE 4 (English): RUTH WANGARA, Xinhua reporter
"So I'm just about to taste Chinese bubble tea, which is a modern type of tea that has become very popular not only here in Kenya but in China as well. Very delicious, nice flavor and sweet."
