The Yangtze River Delta, encompassing Shanghai Municipality, the provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui, has seen vigorous development in port logistics.

The region has tapped into its prime geographical position to speed up multi-modal transport.

According to data from the Ministry of Transport, the container throughput at ports of the Yangtze River Delta region totaled 30.51 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in the first quarter of 2024. This accounted for 39.8 percent of the national total.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): WANG GUOCHAO, President of Lianyungang Port Holding Group Co., Ltd.
"The main function of Lianyungang Port is to serve the Longhai and Lanxin railways in the central and western regions. At the same time, as the eastern starting point for the new Eurasian land-sea intermodal transport channel, we have our features and established brands covering Central Asia and Asia-Europe cross-border transportation."

In recent years, the Yangtze River Delta has also accelerated intelligent construction of ports.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): PENG JIE, Deputy general manager of Ningbo Meidong Container Terminal Co., Ltd.
"This terminal now consists of 10 berths, divided into two phases of construction. Our second phase is seeing a transition from a traditional terminal to an automated one. These 10 berths and the layout of 50 bridge cranes and 175 gantry cranes in the terminal provide the most basic equipment and facilities for improving production capacity and guaranteeing operation capacity at a ten-million-ton level."
