Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil - May 19, 2024

The inhabitants of Porto Alegre have a respite granted by the weather. The rains are not as heavy or permanent, so the water level is beginning to drop, after the historic and tragic floods that hit the region. It is estimated that 90 per cent of Rio Grande do Sul's cities were affected.

But now that the water is beginning to recede from the squares, roads and avenues, there remains the hard task of fighting against what nature's fury has left behind. In this sense, while trying to remove the mud that covers what used to be roads, an unexpected problem has appeared. The rivers that overflowed left in the city visitors as strange as they were unwanted and dangerous: piranhas and alligators.

This footage illustrates streets of Porto Alegre after devastating floods.
