A baby monkey had to be prised away from its dead mother after she was fatally electrocuted by a power line.

Ash, a baby howler monkey was rescued by the International Animal Rescue in Nosara, Costa Rica.

His mother was found dead in the coastal village of Samara - with her baby clinging to her dead body.

A horrific video shows rescuers forced to pull the infant away from its mum - to treat the little one's burns on its fingers.

The baby monkey is now in a stable condition and is being monitored with regular blood tests, following rescue on May 16, 2024.

Gavin Bruce, CEO of International Animal Rescue, said: "Costa Rican wildlife faces unprecedented threats, from wildfires to the illegal pet trade. "

"Last week, the BBC Mammals documentary highlighted the tragic situation of howler monkey uninsulated cable electrocutions."

"The BBC programme reinforced the incredible and tireless work our team at the centre in Costa Rica is doing." "

Ash was treated by vet Francisco who featured in the BBC's Sir David Attenborough Programme which highlighted the perilous journeys of howler monkeys in Costa Rica, due to power cables.

The rescue centre is appealing for support and is currently at full capacity following a surge in injured wildlife, with 189 animals being admitted from January to April 2024.
