Flash floods swamped a road following heavy rain in northeast Thailand.

Footage shows vehicles battling through the deluge in Khon Kaen province on May 22.

A downpour that lasted more than an hour spawned 16-inch deep floods that rendered the area impassable to smaller vehicles.

Motorcycles and small sedans were re-routed as authorities drained water from the submerged road.

Officials said the flooding may last until Thursday due to the small size of the drainage pipes.

The Thai Meteorological Department said that the moderate southwest monsoon is prevailing over the Andaman Sea, western Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. A low-pressure system is also affecting the country's lower north and upper central regions, causing heavy rainfall in various parts of northern Thailand.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.

Just two days earlier, a Singapore Airlines flight was battered by turbulence, that killed one person and left dozens more injured. The plane made an emergency landing in Bangkok.
