An out-of-control bus crashed into cars at an intersection in Thailand.

The blue and white double-decker carrying ten passengers allegedly malfunctioned upon passing through a downhill road and could not stop for the red light in Chanthaburi, Thailand, on May 21.

CCTV footage shows the bus ramming through traffic before halling into a grassy ditch where it halted.

It first hit a Nissan pickup truck that was trying to make a turn and dented its rear lights. It then smashed through a white van, a black Toyota, a Honda, and a second pickup truck.

Police Lieutenant Pharada Waekratok of Mueang Chanthaburi Police Station said: ‘We have collected CCTV footage of the scene and removed the damaged cars to reopen the traffic flow.

‘We have summoned the bus driver and the owners of the damaged cars to the scene for further questioning regarding the cause, in order to take legal action and negotiate damages with the driver.'

There were five vehicles damaged and one passenger from the van was injured. He was taken to Phrapokklao Hospital.

Meanwhile, the bus driver told police his vehicle malfunctioned on a steep downhill road as he tried to reach the terminal. No one was hurt inside the bus.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
