Taliban officials have confirmed that the latest round of flash floods triggered by seasonal heavy rains have killed at least 68 people and injured dozens in Afghanistan with at least 50 dead in Ghor Province.

Taliban officials have confirmed that the latest round of flash floods triggered by seasonal heavy rains have killed at least 68 people and injured dozens in Afghanistan with at least 50 dead in Ghor Province.

Almost 400 kilometers away from north Afghanistan's province of Balkh, the hard-hit Kohistan district in Sar-e Pol Province lies in the valleys that even helicopters can't reach. It took a China Global Television Network (CGTN) correspondent almost eight hours to reach one of the most affected villages, Khawol.

On May 16, harsh floods washed out the area, causing severe damages. Rocks brought by the floods from the nearby mountains few kilometers away ruined the narrow and poorly made roads, which makes it difficult for the rescue and relief teams to arrive at the village timely.

Local residents said they have been living in the valley for decades and have suffered many deaths and huge financial losses from floods almost every year, which is a heavy blow to the already poverty-stricken communities in the area.

As the situation remains alarming in Khawol, local residents have already evacuated their families from the area, mainly women and children, ahead of possible heavy rainfall and floods to hit the village in the coming days.
