STORYLINE:
Experts from around the world gathered at an annual international forum on ecological civilization that kicked off Friday in Claremont in the U.S. state of California, to discuss promoting ecological civilization through research and practices.
The 17th International Forum on Ecological Civilization and the 6th International Youth Forum on Ecological Civilization brought over 130 panelists and attendees from the United States, China, Germany, Italy, Canada, and other nations and regions.
The theme of this year's forum is "Co-Benefits of Human Well-being and Planetary Health." The forum seeks to further promote ecological civilization through research and practice and effectively address current ecological crises facing the global community.
In a congratulatory letter to the forum, Chinese Consul General in Los Angeles Guo Shaochun highlighted the mutual exchanges and understanding in ecological civilization between China and the United States.
Echoing the importance of U.S.-China cooperation, Mary Elizabeth Moore, president of Cobb Institute, said the collaboration between the two countries has the promise of building a worldwide movement toward ecological well-being.
SOUNDBITE (English): MARY ELIZABETH MOORE, President of Cobb Institute
"I think one of the most important things is for us to gather, as we're doing here, to build relationships. Another is for us to do projects that are related to our own context, to share them with one another and to learn from them.
Another one is for us to be active politically and socially so that we communicate the urgency, but also the possibilities of what can be done toward protection and regeneration. We have to be honest that the threat is huge, and we may not succeed in preventing the obliteration of the earth, but our hope would be not to give up on that."
