The Bahamas - May 21, 2024

In a daring rescue mission, a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew, forward-deployed to Great Inagua, sprang into action on May 21, 2024. Responding to distress calls, the heroic crew embarked on a mission to save lives after the 90-foot schooner De Gallant succumbed to the unforgiving waves, sinking approximately 20 miles north of Great Inagua.

The harrowing ordeal unfolded after a fierce storm battered the vessel, causing it to rapidly take on water. Amidst the chaos, the quick actions of the crew members enabled six mariners to escape the sinking ship and seek refuge in the tumultuous waters.

Executing a precision rescue operation, the Coast Guard helicopter crew successfully hoisted the stranded mariners to safety, lifting them from the treacherous sea to the relative security of the aircraft.
