Tourist fined for body slamming Orca whale in New Zealand
A tourist has been fined for body slamming a killer whale off the coast of New Zealand.
Footage shows the thrill-seeker, 50, leaping from the boat and appearing to belly-flop onto the Orca as he splashed into the sea off the coast of Davenport in Auckland in February.
Department of Conservation Principal Investigation Officer Hayden Loper said the tourist had breached the Marine Mammals Protection Act for swimming with the predator.
He said: 'This is stupid behaviour and demonstrates a shocking disregard for the welfare of the orca.
'Orca are immensely powerful animals, and this really could have ended horribly – with either the startled whale being injured, or the man responsible being harmed by the aggravated animal.'
The tourist was fined 600 USD (471 GBP) for the violation.
