A German expat in rural Thailand became an internet celebrity for his uncanny resemblance to the movie character John Wick.

Footage shows the John Wick doppelganger, known by locals as 'Woonsen', posing for selfies with temple visitors who appeared to have mistaken him for Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves in Ratchaburi province on May 20.

The man's sleek, shoulder-length hair parted in the centre, as well as his rugged beard, made him look like the cold-blooded hitman - but with a large and sheepish smile plastered on his face.

Woonsen had previously been seen carrying out mundane chores like grilling seafood, making coffee, and washing dishes at food stalls in the area, baffling Thai passers-by who believed the real Keanu Reeves had visited the country.

Local media reported that Woonsen had a Thai wife of four years, Kanchalee Promma, who gave him his Thai name.

The couple have been living together for four years in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

Kanchalee said they met on a dating app and after tying the knot, divided their time between Germany and Thailand.

She said: 'My husband originally had blonde hair, but I once dyed it black for a lookalike contest at a carnival fair in Germany. I was surprised by how much he resembled John Wick.

'After that, he became a sort of celebrity. People would approach to take photos with him, and even TV shows invited him to make appearances. He told me he enjoys the attention.'

Woonsen said he was happy when people would come up to greet him. He said: 'I am grateful that Thai people are friendly and hospitable. I would like to thank them for always treating me warmly.'

Meanwhile, the real Keanu Reeves is now sporting short hair and announced he will be touring with his band, Dogstar.
