State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil - May 27, 2024

[Note: video contains Portuguese language]

Three weeks after Rio Grande do Sul's worst environmental disaster, which killed more than 160 people and left thousands homeless, the situation remains critical. The Guaiba River has once again surpassed four metres and in Porto Alegre, the capital of the Brazilian state, there are 26 points with a high risk of landslides. The streets that are not flooded show the effects of the destruction, full of mud, debris and rubbish. This panorama and the human and material losses, coupled with uncertainty about the future, have led the population to experience a chronic fear known as environmental anxiety.
