Afghanistan: Afghan flood survivors battle hardship in tents
Baghlan Province, Afghanistan - Recent
Storyline:
Hundreds are dead and thousands homeless in Afghanistan's Baghlan province after a devastating flood tore through the region earlier this month, with survivors now grappling with harsh living conditions in makeshift tents.
Afghanistan is slowly recovering from the flash flood that lashed the country on May 10-11 and killed more than 330 people, mostly in Baghlan province, according to the World Food Programme and local Afghan officials.
In a small village of the province, 42 people were killed, with 43 others seriously injured and many other missing, according to local residents.
They recalled the horror when the flash flood occurred, saying that hundreds of people rushed to a school in the village and took refuge there, but unfortunately they lost their lives inside the school.
More than 200 houses were destroyed in the village, forcing scores of households to live in makeshift tents provided by local relief agencies.
Global charity Save the Children said that about 40,000 children have lost their homes in Baghlan province during this round of devastating floods.
The natural disaster has destroyed hundreds of hectares of agricultural farms and gardens, killing thousands of cattle.
Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries to climate change. It has been experiencing a rise in extreme weather conditions, including floods and drought, according to the United Nations.
