Tory canvasser steals Labour leaflet from letterbox
A Conservative MP has apologised after a canvasser was caught on camera removing a Labour Party pamphlet from a letterbox.
Anthony Buffin was at home in Gloucester when campaigners arrived to deliver leaflets ahead of the upcoming general election.
A Labour campaigner had left a leaflet in his letterbox - but just minutes later, a Conservative canvasser removed the pamphlet and replaced it with his own.
Hearing the rustling from the door, Anthony went to investigate - and upon checking his Ring doorbell, discovered footage of the "concerning incident."
"A Labour campaigner delivered a leaflet to my home, presenting their party's policies and vision," said Anthony."
"Mere minutes later, a Conservative campaigner arrived, delivering their own flyer but, shockingly, removing the Labour leaflet from my letterbox."
"I knew it was a Conservative candidate, because I'd seen them outside. "
"The leaflet was just gone and replaced with his, so I had a look at the CCTV."
"He must have known that was hers, because he pulled it out very discreetly by screwing it up."
Posting the footage to a local community Facebook page, Anthony described his "significant concern about the integrity and trustworthiness of our political representatives" - with many commenters appearing to agree."
"A lot of people were shocked – I didn't post it on a Labour or a Tory page, I just put it on our local community page," said Anthony."
"Some people said it was petty, which I thought it was. It is funny and petty at the same time that someone would do something like that. "
"I don't know what he would have gained from that. "
This behaviour will likely be brushed under the carpet and a simple apology made - but this behaviour paints a very poor picture."
Gloucester's Conservative MP Richard Graham said the volunteer involved has apologised.
"Everyone in the wider team was reminded of our ground rules of respect for constituents and opposition parties alike," he said."
"We win by winning the argument about who is the best MP for Gloucester, not by removing and recycling other would be MPs' claims."
