Heroic rescue: Baby elephant saved from 30-foot well in southern India
Forest and fire department officials in Tamil Nadu, India, successfully rescued a baby elephant that fell into a 30-foot well in Kurichi Nagar, near Kolapalli, in the Nilgiris district on May 29.
The rescue operation began after visuals showed the baby elephant trapped in the deep well, prompting immediate action from the forest department and a rescue team.
Heavy machinery, including a JCB, was brought in to excavate around the well and create a sloped ramp. After hours of meticulous digging, the calf was guided up the ramp and reunited with its anxious mother and waiting herd.
Local reports indicated the calf had accidentally stumbled into the well, leading to a swift response from authorities.
Forest Range Officer Karuppaiah shared with Newslions that the challenging operation took eight hours, involving 40 people and starting at 3 am. Led by DFO Gudalur, Vengatesh Prabhu, the team’s dedication ensured the safe rescue of the calf.
The incident underscores the increasing occurrences of wild elephants venturing into human settlements in search of food and water, often resulting in accidents.
This rescue highlights the coordinated efforts of local authorities and communities to protect wildlife in Tamil Nadu, showcasing the strong bond within the elephant herd and the commitment to wildlife conservation.
