"It is mid-day here in Yambali Village in the Enga Province. As you can see from my background, these are the locals that are volunteering to dig up the bodies of their loved ones without the help of any heavy machineries. Meanwhile, the provincial disaster committee has established two care centers. And the people are being moved there where they are being provided with food, clean drinking water, and other necessities."

The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Center has confirmed that more than 2,000 people were buried alive after a massive landslide occurred in Enga Province last week.

Thousands of residents were being evacuated from the still-active landslide on Tuesday.

On the same day, a UN official said it is "highly unlikely" to find any more survivors from the landslide more than four days after the disaster.

"I won't see the bodies of most of my family members. The big rocks have totally covered them. I know their bodies have already decayed. So I will have to forget them and plant a tree to remember them."

According to a UN media release, the total affected population, including those in need of possible evacuation and relocation, is estimated at 7,849 individuals.
