Canberra ACT, Australia - May 29, 2024

Student protesters at the Australian National University (ANU) have agreed to move their pro-Palestinian encampment to a nearby site in the center of the northern Canberra campus.

The protesters voted on Monday night in favor of moving their encampment to a new site approximately 50 meters away.

Earlier on Monday, the protesters defied an order to disband the encampment. University administrators cited safety concerns about the camp obstructing the primary emergency evacuation site for ANU facilities.

Australian Capital Territory (ACT) Police visited the site on Monday evening and warned protesters that failure to leave by midday Tuesday could result in further police action.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, encampment organizers called for ANU Vice-chancellor Genevieve Bell to accept their invitation to engage with the protesters.

"Our goal has always been to, and continues to be, to ensure our ANU degrees are no longer contributing to genocide," the statement said.

The encampment was one of several set up at Australian universities in late April as an act of protest against ties with Israeli institutions.
