Man walking the entire UK coastline with his dog - a journey of 11,023 miles
A man is walking the entire UK coastline with his pet dog - a journey of 11,023 miles.
Martyn Green, 37, began his mammoth trek on March 8 - 83 days ago - and has since walked 696 miles to reach his current point in Gillingham, Essex.
Martyn started this endeavour after he suffered serious injuries in a violent street robbery.
In December 2021, Martyn was stabbed four times in Torquay, Devon, by two men who were meeting with him to buy cannabis.
The incident left him shaken up and he became isolated.
After two long years, Martyn decided he couldn't carry on like this and set himself the challenge to walk the entire UK coastline with his three-year-old Collie mix, Rolo.
Martyn, from Torquay, Devon, said: "I just didn't really do anything for two years. "
"People kept saying to not let it ruin my life but I think I did for that time."
"I know I made a mistake by being involved in such a situation so I do regret that side of it but times in the pandemic were hard."
"I had gotten stuck in a rut and I felt so bad for not taking Rolo out on big, long walks so I decided to make a change."
"I don't think I'll ever go back to Torquay now. I just want to keep moving and seeing things."
Martyn has been using his savings to fund his trip as well as the money he made by selling all his belongings.
But he says the kindness of strangers has really made a difference.
Martyn said: "Whether it's people paying for a coffee on my link.tree or a passerby advising me on the best spot to walk through. "
"I wouldn't have gotten to where I am now without people's kindness."
Rolo has been thoroughly enjoying her time on the trip and Martyn hopes she will become the first dog to walk the entire UK coast.
He said: "She is always bounding ahead of me then she comes back to me barks as if to say 'Hurry up!' and then runs off again."
"It's difficult to get her to settle in her tent for the evening, because she just wants to keep running."
The experience has undoubtedly been an enjoyable one for novice campers Martyn and Rolo, but there are the simple pleasures that are missed.
He said: "I do miss the ability to have a nice hot shower whenever I want and a proper bed to sleep in. "
"I think I got a cold the other day from pitching my tent up on concrete."
Martyn is in no rush to complete his challenge, taking his time to enjoy the places he's visiting with Rolo.
He's is especially excited when he gets round to some of the Scottish coast and Pembrokeshire in Wales.
He said: "I've been through four storms so far and I've still got winter to come which I'm sure will have its own challenges."
"But I've always wanted to do something really mad, so here I am."
