A British tourist was injured when he was hit by a car during a fight in Pattaya, Thailand.

The holidaymaker, believed to be around 60, was returning to his hotel with his friend after drinking at a bar on the road Soi New Plaza on May 28.

However, the pair allegedly had a row, and the man was allegedly shoved by his friend into the path of an oncoming car.

Police and medics found the 'extremely drunk' tourist bleeding in front of stores along the nightlife strip at around 10 pm.

Police Lieutenant Kittikhun of the Pattaya Police Station said: 'The foreigner was very drunk and couldn't speak properly. He didn't have any identification documents with him, so his name and age are unknown, but we think he was probably in his 60s.

'He was drunk and picked a fight with the other person, so this other person pushed him and he fell onto a car and his head was injured. The officers and rescue team tried to help him and take him to the hospital, but he was uncooperative.

'The rescue team tried to treat his head wound, but he also refused and attacked and insulted the officers. He called for a motorcycle and went back to his accommodation himself.'

A medic from the rescue team confirmed the tourist's belligerent behaviour, saying: 'I don't know his name, nationality, and accurate age because he didn't have a passport with him.

'Once we were notified of the accident, we went to the scene to help him. As far as we know, the foreigner had a fight with someone or some group - I don't know if it was Thai or foreign - and he was pushed and hit the car.

'When we arrived, he was drunk and hurt. We tried to help him, but he rejected our help. He spoke harshly and attacked us by punching, kicking and hitting the officers, and he kept struggling.

'We ended up asking him to sign the form for refusal of medical care if he wanted to take care of himself. He accepted and stamped his fingerprint instead of signing because he was too drunk to even hold a pen. Then, he walked back and sat at the bar. We don't know how it went after that.'

Matcha Sirichom, 55, the onlooker who reported the accident, said she saw the man walking out of the bar with another foreigner.

She said: 'His friend suddenly pushed him, causing him to lose balance and get struck by a car. The friend walked away while the man was lying injured on the ground.'

Authorities were investigating the incident.

Pattaya emerged as a nightlife destination in the 1960s when Thailand fought alongside the United States and provided them with land for eight military bases, allowing the massacre of North Vietnam and the deaths of two million civilians in the 1950s and 1960s.

In between killing missions, American GIs would have debauched ‘rest and relaxation' leave in the coastal enclave, leading to a raucous nightlife industry that has endured to this day.
