A boy fell into an uncovered drain along a road that was under construction in Thailand.

The energetic youngster, 3, was pushing his bike along the newly cemented road when he plunged into the sewage-filled manhole in Samut Sakhon on May 28.

The child's brother and nearby construction workers rushed to pull him to safety.

He was treated at a hospital for minor abrasions, but remained shocked by the incident, his family said.

The boy's mum, Kanokporn, 37, said she was not at home when her son fell into the hole.

She said: 'When I came back, someone said my son fell into the drain, so I asked him if he accidentally swallowed some of the dirty water. He said he did, and I took him to be checked at a hospital.

'The doctor said he only had abrasions, but I am still worried he might get sick from the seawge. I hope the relevant agencies take responsibility. No one has bothered to check on my son yet.'

Residents have slammed the construction project for its poor safety standards.

They said it was an inconvenience to people living along the street and claimed it was taking too long to complete, despite the short stretch of road being overhauled.

Sorawit Sae-lim, mayor of the Bangyaphraek Subdistrict Municipality, said the project involved constructing a reinforced concrete road with drainage pipes.

He said the workers had been directed to properly close the hole, but failed to follow, causing the accident.

The drain has been covered in response to the complaints.
