UN warns of disease threat in Papua New Guinea after deadly landslide
Enga Province, Papua New Guinea - May 29, 2024

Storyline:
Survivors of a deadly Papua New Guinea landslide face a significant risk of disease outbreak and are yet to receive sufficient food and clean water supplies, United Nations International Organization for Migration warned Thursday.
In an assessment report, the organization said that most local creeks flow through the landslide site, contaminating the primary water source. Without access to clean water, people in the affected areas are at increased risk of malaria and other diseases.
Aerial footage revealed the full extent of the landslide, with boulders, uprooted trees, and mud debris scattering across the site.
Rescue workers and local villagers continued to dig through the rubble in search of bodies. The massive amount of yellow-gray mud and rocks also isolated the area, cutting off access to the outside world.
According to the United Nations International Organization for Migration, the landslide, which hit the Enga Province's highlands last Friday, has killed at least 670 people. The Papua New Guinea National Disaster Center said that over 2,000 people are believed to have been buried alive by mud and rubble.
The unstable geological conditions and risks of secondary disasters have impeded rescue operations.
