In an emotional scene in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, a baby elephant's steadfast care helped its ailing mother recover. The female elephant, found unconscious due to poor health in the Marudhamalai foothills, was discovered by forest department patrols along with her calf, who refused to leave her side.
Coimbatore forestry staff, led by District Forest Officer Jeyaraj, and veterinarians, including Dr. Sukumar, swiftly treated the elephant with fluids and nutrients. The calf, distressed but devoted, stayed close throughout the treatment. Over two days, doctors administered 30 bottles of fluids and anti-nutrients, ultimately deciding to use a crane to help the mother elephant stand.
Tamil Nadu Forest Department Chief Secretary Supriya Sahu praised the team on social media for their round-the-clock efforts. The heartwarming outcome saw the mother elephant standing and her calf nursing contentedly. The forest department continues to monitor the mother’s health closely.

While patrolling the foothills of Coimbatore Marudhamalai, the forest department heard the sound of an elephant. Upon further inspection, they found a female elephant accompanied by her calf.
The mother elephant appeared to be ill, and her calf stood by her side, refusing to leave.
Coimbatore forestry staff and doctors, led by the District Forest Officer, promptly arrived at the scene to treat the sick elephant. They administered medical care, provided fruits, and monitored her health closely. The calf, visibly distressed over its mother's condition, is also being fed and monitored by the team.
elephant was given glucose water rich food and medicine throughout yesterday and the treatment continued today. The doctors and the forest department decided to lift the elephant with the help of a crane as it recovered to some extent. After a long consultation, the forest department lifted the elephant with the help of a crane and cooled it down by pouring water on it . the baby elephant joined the mother elephant and cuddled with the mother elephant
Speaking about this, Coimbatore District Veterinarian Sukumar said:- The female elephant was about 40 years old due to health problems. With it was a three-four-month-old male cub. Anaimalai Tiger Reserve Field Director and Coimbatore District Forest Officer are providing treatment by veterinarians.The elephant was given 30 bottles of fluids and anti-nutrients yesterday. Yesterday, the herd of elephants thought that the baby elephant would be taken away, but that did not happen, so today the female elephant was treated while keeping the baby elephant. 30 bottles of fluids and anti-nutrients are provided daily today. Now the elephant stands still after being lifted by the crane. The baby elephant is drinking milk from the mother elephant.
