The competition was held on the occassion of a annual temple festival in kambiliyampatti village near Chanarpatti, Dindigul district, tamilnadu.
A 79-foot-tall tree was cut, its bark peeled off, and smeared with substances like aloe vera and oils to make it slippery. Participants, mostly youths, were anointed and began climbing the trees. Unfortunately, some slipped and fell. After about three hours, one 50 year old man successfully climbed and claimed the prizes.
