Gaza, Palestine - May 29, 2024

Damage to water infrastructure and fuel shortages in the southern Gaza Strip mean that some Palestinians are surviving on just half a litre (two glasses) of water a day, humanitarian aid groups said.
That amount - for drinking, washing and cooking - is only three per cent of the 15 litres a day that the World Health Organisation says is needed for basic survival.

The International Rescue Committee and Medical Aid for Palestinians, two groups operating in Gaza, noted that waterborne diseases have increased, partly due to the effect of water shortages on hygiene and sanitation.

Kiryn Lanning, head of IRC's operations in the Strip, said NGO staff visited one shelter with 10,000 people receiving only 4,000 litres of water a day. Another, accommodating 8,000 people, had 12 latrines, forcing more than 600 people to share one.
