Tourists missing after falling into gorge stream in southern China
On June 2, two tourists, a man and a woman, went missing after falling into a stream while crossing a gorge in the Shiren Gorge Scenic Area in Yutou Township, Huangyan District, Taizhou, Zhejiang Province. The search and rescue operation is ongoing.
Video footage from the scene shows the pair attempting to cross the stream using a rope, with people on both banks assisting. Suddenly, the woman lost her balance and was swept away by the strong current. The man tried to save her but was also caught in the torrent. Both clung to the rope as onlookers attempted to pull them to safety, but the rope eventually snapped.
The Huangyan District Emergency Management Bureau reported that the incident occurred around 12:35 p.m. on June 2, prompting an immediate emergency response. Two teams of rescue personnel were dispatched, and site operations continued. As of 1 p.m. on June 3, a member of the Taizhou Feima Emergency Rescue Team informed reporters that the search efforts were still underway. The heavy rain from the previous day had intensified the water flow and created a whirlpool, complicating the rescue efforts. The rescue team is meticulously surveying the area, especially the whirlpool, to formulate a retrieval plan. The missing individuals have yet to be found, and the search continues.
