Two male Stag Beetles fight over a Female
Two nationally scarce Male Stag Beetles (Lucanus cervus) fight over a female - locking antlers trying to throw one another off. This scene was captured in our garden in Hampshire, UK just on the edge of the New Forest. A fascinating beetle, that is a threatened species but seems to have a stronghold in our locality and feeds on our rotting Eucalypt tree stump, taking flight over a period of a few days when the evenings get warm enough. They have a very clumsy flight behavior and often can be heard bumping off windows and fences before getting airborne in a rather ungainly vertical fashion, antlers pointing up. These two males fought for over two hours and as were both of similar size were not giving up on getting their prize of the female (no antlers). Footage of this behaviour is quite rare. Hope you enjoy!
