Nightmare scene as thousands of bugs invade home in Thailand
Tens of thousands of beetles caused a nightmarish scene as they invaded a couple's home in Thailand.
The swarm of insects emerged from the ground and took over the residents' wood-and-concrete dwelling after recent rains in Khon Kaen province on June 2.
Footage shows clusters of beetles crawling over the house's floors, walls, facade, and ceiling, leaving no surface or crevice of the two-storey home uncovered.
Long-suffering couple Naowarat Nailee, 54, and her husband, Saman Nailee, 52, said they have been dealing with the annual beetle infestations on their own for more than 27 years 'because they did not want to bother other people'.
However, this year's invasion was particularly unbearable, and they had to ask help from the local government for help.
Kranuan District Health Office and District Office personnel arrived and fumigated the residence on June 3.
Upon being sprayed, the beetles dropped dead onto the floor, and their remains were collected and incinerated.
Kranuan District Chief Kennesaw Ketin said the bugs were woodboring beetles - an umbrella term for various beetle species that consume and destroy wood.
He said: 'These beetles lay their eggs in soil or wood. The recent rain created suitable conditions for the eggs to hatch because of the moist environment. They then gravitated toward the couple's home in droves.'
Saman said he had built the house himself, but left it uninhabited for around eight years when he left with his wife to work in another province. They returned this year, only to find that the overwhelming beetle swarm had taken over.
He said: 'I noticed that the beetles emerged from underground, usually during April or May, to enter the house. I would kill them to feed our fish, but there were just too many of them this year. Despite this incident, I still want to live here.'
Meanwhile, bedridden homeowner Naowarat thanked authorities for their help in dispatching the pests.
She said: 'It was difficult dealing with the infestation, especially since I have been bedridden since suffering a stroke. I had to lie under two mosquito nets with a towel covering my face just to sleep. I'm glad the authorities helped us because I did not know what else to do.'
The house underwent a second round of fumigation to kill any beetle stragglers.
The couple will be able to return to their home after three days, and were temporarily staying in an adjacent storage house nearby.
