STORYLINE:
Tanzania's first-ever fishing harbor will be completed in 2025, a Tanzanian senior official told Xinhua on Monday.
The harbor, located in the Lindi region along the Indian Ocean coastline, is expected to boost the country's fish catches in deep seas.
The project is being built by China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC), a leading Chinese construction company.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): BIAN LIANG, Project manager of China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd (CHEC) Tanzania Maritime Project Department
"We are building a fish port, and also all facilities for the fishery business, including a refrigeration center for storage and an oil tank and maintenance facilities for the vessels, including a slipway.
It was estimated that around 1,000 local workers will work with China Harbor from the commencement date to completion. But also, after the project's completion, during the operation period, it will bring 30,000 work positions, direct or indirect, through the fishery business."
In addition to employment opportunities, the harbor and its associated facilities will enhance market access for fishermen and stimulate economic growth for local communities.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Swahili): SUDI SAIDI, Local fisherman"Since the beginning of the port construction, we have seen some benefits.
Firstly, the number of people here has increased, and that means our money circulation is high now.
For instance, my wife is a street food vendor, and her business is booming due to the increase in population here in the port.
Secondly, some of our relatives are employed at the port construction site, which is a big benefit to all of us.
We are more optimistic about the future when the harbor is completed. Because as fishermen, we were struggling, especially when we had a lot of fish that exceeded our local market demand.
But now, according to what we are told, the new port will have a huge storage facility and a high volume of ice production, so we can store fish and sell it when the market is good."
