Controversial Kobe Bryant helicopter crash reenactment stirs criticism at Chinese comic convention
A participant at a comic convention in eastern China sparked widespread discussion and criticism by reenacting the tragic helicopter crash scene of the late basketball icon Kobe Bryant.
The shocking video was filmed in Hangzhou City in Zhejiang Province on June 1.
The individual, dressed in Kobe's iconic number 24 Lakers jersey and wearing his mask, carried a helicopter model made from materials like iced tea packaging. In front of a crowd, he suddenly fell to the ground, simulating Kobe's helicopter crash. Reactions from onlookers varied, with some laughing and others expressing strong disapproval.
Videos and photos of the incident quickly spread online, igniting heated debates among netizens. Many condemned the inappropriate imitation, deeming it disrespectful to Kobe's memory. Some went as far as to label it as "exploiting others' tragedies and pain for attention."
Kobe Bryant, a legendary figure in basketball history, tragically passed away in a helicopter crash in January 2020. His demise not only deprived the basketball world of a superstar but also left global fans mourning. However, the scene at the Hangzhou expo reflects a lack of respect for the deceased.
Numerous experts and scholars have weighed in on the incident, stating that while cosplay is an important activity at comic conventions, there should be boundaries and moral guidelines. Mimicking others' tragedies and pain for amusement not only lacks respect for the deceased but also demonstrates apathy towards life and history.
Currently, the identity and motives of the cosplayer remain unclear.
