Fireworks debris sets alight food stall roof as display goes awry
Fireworks debris set alight a food stall roof as the display went awry in the Philippines.
The pyrotechnic show was part of a local music festival, but authorities said the pyrotechnics were set up incorrectly, causing them to fly towards the shops in Mati City.
Footage shows the hot debris burning and melting through the tarpaulin at the Summerfrolic Festival on June 1.
To keep the flames from eating the entire structure, stall owners and onlookers threw chairs and drinking water into the burning holes, putting them out.
One of the music festival-goers, Dennis Esquibel, said: ‘It happened last June 1, 2024, during the Summerfrolic Festival night, a huge music festival held at Dahican, Mati City. The guests were local and international well-known DJs, visited by thousands of people from different places here in the Philippines.
‘So every time the event got wild, they would set off mini-fireworks, I guess, every hour.'
Dennis added the fireworks were set up on the top part of the main stage, and at the back part were the food and beverage stalls.
When a batch of fireworks were lit, some of the debris rained down on the tent.
He said: ‘We were sitting and drinking at a stall right behind the stage. That time, when they set off the fireworks, most of the debris from the post-fireworks landed on the tarpaulin roof. That's because we were at the beach, where the event was being held, so the wind was strong.'
The local Bureau of Fire Protection department confirmed fireworks caused the fire. They added that they were incorrectly set alight above the stage instead of lower ground.
However, no one was hurt by the fire, and the event proceeded as planned.
