As monsoon season sets in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan Disaster Management Centre has issued a severe flood warning as heavy rains continue to lash the country. Due to the heavy rains, power supply has been cut for various regions and schools across the country due to the adverse weather conditions in the country.

At least 30 people have died due to extreme rains and floods that have devastated Sri Lanka since May 15, State Minister of Defence Premitha Bandara Tennakoon told Parliament on Wednesday.

Heavy monsoonal showers have destroyed 71 houses while another 9,300 suffered partial damage. Some 825 small and medium-scale industries have suffered damages alongside 63 infrastructure system setups.

The Sri Lankan Navy and other military units have been deployed with boats to assist in rescue operations in flood-affected areas.
