North Korea sent hundreds of rubbish-laden balloons across the border amid mounting tensions with South Korea.

Video shows one of the balloons landing near a car park in front of a building in Incheon, around 17 miles from the capital Seoul, on June 1.

The South Korean military has been deploying ordnance disposal and chemical and biological warfare response teams across the country since May 28 to inspect, collect, and dispose of the plastic bags, which were later found to be carrying cigarette butts, waste batteries, scrap paper, and animal manure.

Police state North Korea, which is tightly controlled by its eccentric authoritarian leader Kim Jong Un, said the campaign was in response to South Korean activists allegedly floating balloons to send anti-Pyongyang leaflets, USB sticks with K-pop music videos and K-dramas, and propaganda materials across the frontier.

The spat between the two countries comes amid rising tensions following a botched spy satellite launch by Pyongyang.

South Korea has responded to the balloon barrage by suspending a military pact in 2018, allowing it to resume army drills along the militarised border.
