Australia: Coastal Landslip at Inskip Point Stuns Onlookers
Inskip, Australia - June 3, 2024
In a startling display of nature's unpredictability, rangers from the Department of Environment, Science, and Innovation were eyewitnesses to a near-shore landslip on June 3rd at Inskip Point. This event resulted in the formation of a large, deep hole at the western end of the barge landing, leaving onlookers astonished by the sheer force of nature.
Near-shore landslips, commonly referred to as sinkholes, are natural coastal phenomena that defy prediction. These occurrences occur when a substantial body of sand swiftly shifts, creating a small cliff that rapidly advances inland as sand debris disperses into the sea.
In response to the event, the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service has taken proactive measures to ensure public safety. A buffer zone has been established along the coastline, where camping and vehicular access are strictly prohibited. Additionally, camping area boundaries have been situated behind vegetated foredune areas, aimed at minimizing impacts on stabilizing vegetation and mitigating potential risks to campers.
