Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil - June 6, 2024

The Brazilian city of Porto Alegre marked one month since the start of unprecedented flooding on Monday, with the focus on clean-up efforts that have already removed 27,700 tonnes of rubbish from the streets.

The Guaiba river, which bathes the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, with a population of 1.3 million people, reached 3.82 metres yesterday morning, 22 centimetres above flood level.

With the decrease in rainfall, the city council has set up clean-up crews to remove unusable furniture, mattresses and household appliances that residents are leaving on the pavements.

Around 800 municipal clean-up workers and 300 vehicles, including diggers and lorries, are working in the neighbourhoods where the water has receded.
