Valuable fish tragically dies after escaping tank at Chinese aquarium
A valuable arapaima gigas unexpectedly leapt out of its tank and died at an aquarium in northern China.
The CCTV footage was filmed in Laiyuan County in Hebei Province on June 4th.
The airport arapaima gigas fish, a star exhibit at the aquarium for six years, measuring 1.6 metres in length and valued at around 50,000 yuan (£5,400), broke through the tank cover, leaving everyone present stunned.
According to Mr. Sun, the aquarium's manager, they heard a noise and turned to see the fish tank area in disarray, with the fish flopping on the ground and knocking over some flowerpots.
Despite swift efforts to return the fish to the tank for rescue, it tragically succumbed to internal injuries.
The aquarium expressed deep regret over the incident, describing the fish as a cherished member of their establishment, akin to losing a close friend.
To honour and remember the fish, they plan to preserve it as a specimen for permanent display.
The incident sparked discussion online, with some expressing regret over the loss of such a valuable ornamental fish.
Experts suggest that the fish's escape may be related to factors such as environmental stress, water quality, temperature, and instinctual behaviour.
