Truck crashes into ditch to avoid lorry blocking road
This is the dramatic moment a truck plunged into a ditch to avoid a lorry obstructing a road in Thailand.
Dashcam footage shows the truck trying to overtake, but swerving off the road to avoid crashing into the lorry that was manoeuvring in Ang Thong province on June 3.
Authorities said truck driver Sakda Yenpijit suffered a laceration on his left arm and a dislocated left leg, while his passenger Thairak Meepan was stuck in his seat and had to be extracted by rescuers.
Both men were rushed to the Phothong Hospital for serious injuries.
Passing driver Kanyapat Chitprang, who witnessed the crash, said: 'I'm not sure if the truck driver was going fast or not, but he saw my car slowing down and tried to overtake me. However, he did not see the trailer in front of me, so he fell off the side of the road. I'm not sure if he couldn't brake.'
Rammasak Police Station officers said they gathered evidence at the scene for legal action.
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
