Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico - April 24, 2024

US President Joe Biden on Tuesday signed an executive order that will drastically restrict asylum applications at the US-Mexico border, in one of his toughest immigration measures and coming in the midst of the November general election campaign.
The tool is effective immediately and provides for the temporary suspension of applications when there are more than 2,500 in a day at unofficial points of entry, and will only resume service when the daily number of applicants drops to 1,500.

It stipulates a refusal of asylum for those who cross the border illegally or without authorisation, except in cases considered very convincing.

In addition, it relies on sections 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which allow for the suspension of entry of non-citizens who enter the US illegally.
