New Delhi, Delhi, India - June 5, 2024

One of India's largest airlines has just launched a new option that allows women travellers to see where other women are seated when selecting seats for their flights.

According to a statement, low-cost carrier IndiGo Airlines is offering female passengers who check in online a pilot form feature for their flights.

The airline, founded in 2006, operates more than 2,000 domestic and international flights a day in India.

In the statement, IndiGo said the feature, which will be available to women travelling alone or who are part of a family booking, aligns with its "#GirlPower ethos".

"IndiGo is proud to announce the introduction of a new feature that aims to make the travel experience more convenient for our female passengers," the airline said.

"We are committed to providing an unparalleled travel experience to all our passengers, and this new feature is just one of the many steps we are taking to achieve that goal."

Although the airline did not specify a reason for giving women the option to see where other women are seated, assaults on women and children during commercial flights are regularly reported around the world.

In the US, in-flight crimes fall under the jurisdiction of the FBI. In a report released in April to raise awareness about sexual assault on planes, the FBI said 96 cases of in-flight sexual assault were recorded during 2023.

"In-flight sexual assault, which often takes the form of unwanted touching, is a serious crime that can land offenders in prison," the report said.

"Typically, men are the perpetrators and women and unaccompanied minors are the victims," it adds.
