STORYLINE:

STANDUP (English): ALI JASWAL, Xinhua reporter
"Right now, I am present at the dam of the Suki Kinari (SK) Hydropower Project, located on Kunar River in Western Himalayas in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. This is the biggest hydropower project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) framework. This is the first hydropower project which has used a rockfill dam. It's a very cost-effective technology as it consumes very less cost on the construction."

SOUNDBITE (Urdu): JAFAR KAZMI, Site engineer at the dam
"In a concrete dam, due to stages and steps, the water stoppers have to be put, which generally create seepage.
However, the rockfill dam is better than concrete because in this we have a benefit that it reduces the cost, and from the safety point of view, it's a better dam, because, in this rockfill dam, the downstream area has a whole drainage body, which saves it from any sort of seepage or in case of any crack that might occur in the control section or asphalt, it's not going to affect the dam because if any water flows from them, it would go into the drainage body area. That makes it safer than an ordinary dam."

SK is a diversion-type hydropower project featuring a high head and long tunnel.

The main structures of the project include a dam, spillway, power intake, headrace tunnel, surge shaft, penstock, underground powerhouse, tailrace tunnel, and access tunnel.
