Gaza Strip - June 6, 2024

Storyline:
The Israeli airstrike on Thursday targeting a school housing displaced people in the Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip has inflicted profound grief and fear on the survivors who sought refuge in the building.

Despite the devastation, survivors told reporters they have nowhere else to go and are forced to continue living in the damaged building.

At least 35 Palestinians were killed, and dozens of others injured in the Israeli airstrike, the Palestinian official news agency WAFA reported on Thursday. Hamas-run media office in Gaza condemned Israel's attack on the school as a "terrible massacre" in a statement, calling it "clear evidence of the crime of genocide committed against civilians".

The school has been sheltering approximately 1,000 displaced individuals from northern and central Gaza. Following the attack, survivors are now forced to remain in the unsafe remains of the building, as they have no other refuge.

The densely populated area surrounding the school also suffered significant damage, with many nearby residential buildings heavily impacted by the airstrike.

Regarding this airstrike, the Israeli military claimed that it was a targeted strike based on precise intelligence and claimed that measures were taken beforehand to avoid civilian casualties. However, the severe casualties resulting from the strike starkly contrast with the Israeli military's statements.

The United Nations Labour agency said the unemployment rate in Gaza has surged to nearly 80 percent. The nearly nine-month conflict has made the humanitarian situation in Gaza desperate, accompanied by widespread of devastation of economic activities and livelihoods.
