STORYLINE:
Over 50 high school students and teachers from the U.S. state of Iowa participated on Saturday in a cultural event celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival in Shijiazhuang, north China's Hebei Province.
At the Shijiazhuang Foreign Language School, they engaged in traditional activities like calligraphy, crafting sachets, and preparing zongzi alongside local students.
The American students and teachers showed a keen interest in Chinese traditions and expressed hope for more educational exchanges in the future.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JESSICA GOGERTY, Director of Advanced Learning for Des Moines Public Schools
"You will get a chance to learn a new culture. You'll get a chance to share your culture and make some friendships that could last a very long time. It is good for Iowa, it is good for China - it is good for both, so we should go. So I'm excited that so many children chose to come and they have been so happy."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): IRIE FREEMAN, High school student from U.S. state of Iowa
"I learned how to make sticky rice dumplings. I'm not that good at it, but I learned how to do that. I've also really improved my Chinese in like talking and the different tones and how to say things. I do still have an American accent, but I will say that I do feel like I'm getting better."
The group arrived in China on Wednesday for a week-long trip.
The trip is part of a broader initiative by China to invite 50,000 young Americans to China on exchange and study programs within five years to increase exchanges between the two peoples.
