The Batang Sianok River in Indonesia's National Ngarai Sianok Geopark suddenly overflowed with strong currents.

Footage from Agam Regency, West Sumatra Province on June 3, 2024, shows water overflowing and flooding homes and stalls along the riverbank.

Local resident Mus Tari, a former head of Jorong Lambah Village, said the river overflowed due to a suspected landslide on the canyon wall the night before.

Landslide debris consisting of wood and sand piled up, blocking the flow of the river in the narrow Sampik Canyon, causing it to overflow and break its banks in the afternoon.

"The water flow was initially normal, there may have been rain upstream, and the flow may have been blocked, causing it to break and the water to overflow. This has impacted the cafes along the river, many of which were damaged by the currents," Tari added.

During the flood, the water level inside the houses and cafes was around 50 to 70 centimeters.

There were no fatalities in the incident. The flood and overflow subsided within two hours.

Rain that returned to the area that night put residents on alert for possible further flooding.
