Model goes BLIND and has eyeball removed after eyelash extension blunder at clinic
A Thai woman went blind and had her eyeball removed after a horrible eyelash extension blunder at a clinic in Thailand.
The bar hostess Bai Fern, 40, visited the Ban Irene clinic in Chonburi province on the recommendation of her friend on March 8.
However, the botched procedure led to a severe infection when some eyelash adhesive reportedly trickled into her left eye.
Speaking to local media, Bai Fern said: 'The staff just told me to sit in front of the electric fan to ease the stinging, but it still continued even after I returned home. My symptoms became worse around March 17 or 18, so I took some anti-inflammatory medication.'
Bai Fern finally visited a doctor on March 20 for persistent eye pain and severe swelling as her iris turned a turbid milky colour.
She said: 'I was shocked when the doctor told me to call my family and inform them of my infection. I thought it was just a minor issue. I did not think it would be that severe.'
The woman then went to the Queen Savang Vadhana Memorial Hospital the following morning but was told her healthcare insurance would not cover the hospital fees. She transferred to Chonburi Hospital for treatment instead.
Bai Fern said: 'The doctor asked if I was ready or not. At that time, I was shocked. What did he mean? But eventually, I understood that he meant the removal of my eye. He previously mentioned that I would never be able to see in my affected eye again, whether I keep it or not.'
Following the surgery and recovery, Bai Fern has filed a complaint against the beauty clinic with the Banglamung Police Station in Chonburi on June 6.
Her lawyers, Somyot Nanaprasert and Peerachai Chawaratchotiwong, said the clinic was liable for 'intentional or negligent actions that cause damage to another person's property'.
Somyot said: 'Our client is a model who uses her beauty to work and earn income. Her career has been negatively impacted due to the surgery's effect on her appearance.
'In terms of damages, she has had to pay for treatment, medication, and various travel expenses, which we are collecting to present in court.
'However, we will give the other party a chance to mediate and talk, and we are waiting for the police to call them in for questioning.'
The beauty clinic owner, Onanong Kaewkanha, 31, has declined to comment on the issue stating she was in Bangkok.
In May, a Thai woman had to undergo corrective surgery for a bungled eyebag reduction surgery.
The divorcee, identified only as 'Miss A', 27, underwent the blepharoplasty operation to reduce her puffy eyebags, only to be left looking like a giant panda instead.
The operation caused a horrible infection under her eyes that left her 'feeling disabled' and unable to walk on her own.
Miss A reported the doctor at the Pak Kret Police Station in Nonthaburi province. She is now receiving treatment from a team of kind surgeons at Bangkok's Yanhee Hospital, who offered to treat her for free.
