Landslide drags cars into river following heavy rain in Thailand
This is the dramatic moment a landslide dragged cars and a house into a river today.
CCTV shows how the riverbanks suddenly gave way and pulled the vehicles and a car park cover into the water in Chai Nat, Thailand, on June 10.
A Buddhist monk in the wooden hut was also sent into the river opposite the Wat Thammamun Worawihan temple. He escaped unharmed.
Police officers who arrived at the scene said that three cars, five motorcycles, and five bicycles were all submerged in the Chao Phraya River.
Police Major Manit Yangthung of Mueang Chai Nat Police Station went to the scene with the rescue team, local authorities, and relevant organisations after receiving the report.
The authorities blocked off the area to prevent further danger from the landslide.
Jitthana Yingthaweelapa, deputy chief executive of Chai Nat Provincial Administrative Organisation, inspected the area and dispatched relevant organisations to assist with the situation.
The diving team was tasked with locating the submerged vehicles before a crane could pull them up to the surface.
Officials believe that recent heavy rain had caused the riverbanks to weaken. They then collapsed into the water.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
