Grandmother gets married aged 79 - just six weeks after meeting new partner
A grandmother who was single for 30 years has remarried at the age of 79 - just SIX WEEKS after meeting her new man.
Ernestine Murphy says she had been living a "cooped up mundane life" watching old cowboy films at home after losing her late husband of 20 years, Robert Lee, when he was just 39."
But two months ago, she revealed out of the blue to her granddaughter, Michelle, 30, that she had "met someone at church" - Moses Cusse, 79, a grandfather-of-two and carpenter."
Michelle was then shocked when Ernestine revealed the pair would be getting married on May 25 at Alpha and Omega church, Richmond, Virginia, US, in front of 55 guests – just six weeks after they met.
Michelle, who works in customer service, also from Richmond, said: "When she told me I was shocked - she barely leaves the house."
"To hear her that she had met someone new was crazy. I knew this man must be something special."
"I couldn't believe it, she has struggled with depression for years and to see her bounce back was amazing. "
"My grandmother is essentially my mum - as she raised me - and to see her suddenly living like she has a purpose is so great – and all because she's in love."
Ernestine and her new man, Moses, originally from Las Vegas, Nevada, met at their local church - and the grandmother-of-four told Michelle she'd met someone.
Ernestine - who used to work for Philip Morris tobacco before retiring - revealed she had met a man but at that time she hadn't even got his name as she was too shy to ask.
Ernestine and Moses spoke daily on her flip phone and met up constantly.
Michelle said: "I was getting booted off the phone, but she kept just saying they were taking things slow."
The couple continued to chat on the phone and meet up before announcing - only six weeks after meeting – that they were getting married.
Michelle said: "I went to walk the dog and was trying to process it, it had been such short period of time and had moved so fast."
"But then I thought you're nearly 80 – life is not guaranteed, why should I not support her?" "
Michelle met Moses at a family dinner just a few days before the wedding.
Michelle said: "They are so adorable – they are practically the same height. "
"He's a perfect gentleman." "
The wedding had a small ceremony which took place at the couple's local church in Richmond, Virginia and Michelle's TikTok of the special day went viral.
Ernestine said: "I'm not sure what viral means, but after seeing all the love and support, I knew it was God who was behind it."
Both Ernestine and Michelle wore matching pink dresses in what Michelle described as a "dream wedding." "
After the ceremony the couple had a reception - also held at the church and have plans to take a honeymoon soon.
Afterwards, Ernestine moved in with Moses house, also in Richmond, straight away.
Michelle said: "It has all been amazing, it just shows it's never too late to fall in love."
