Endangered ring-tailed lemur babies born and thriving at Moscow Zoo
This is the touching moment a caring mother carries two cute playful endangered ring-tailed lemur babies on her furry back at Moscow Zoo in Russia.
Moscow Zoo said in a statement: 'There is a new addition to the Moscow Zoo: a pair of ring-tailed lemurs have given birth to two cubs.
'Lemurs were born in the beginning of May. The animals feel good. They spend the first months of life primarily on their mother's chest and back.
'From time to time they get off her hands and take their first steps, but all this is in close proximity to their mother.
'For ring-tailed lemurs, not only the mother can carry a baby, but also other family members, including older siblings, the father and other adult males and females.
'The baby's independent walks become more frequent and distant over time, but sleep and feeding always take place in a hug with the mother.
'After five months, milk feeding stops, the cub becomes much more independent and gradually switches to 'adult' food.
'The diet of ring-tailed lemurs is quite varied, including fresh vegetables and fruits, various protein foods such as quail eggs, boiled meat, insects, nuts, and seeds.
'Animals also receive special mineral supplements daily.
'Ring-tailed lemurs usually live in groups of six to 30 individuals. The groups include both adult males and adult females, who occupy a leading position.
'It is the females who have the right to choose food or a partner.
'Ring-tailed lemurs can breed annually. The duration of pregnancy is approximately 135 days, the weight of the baby at birth is 80-120 grammes.
'Ring-tailed lemurs are listed as a critically endangered species in the International Red Book. In nature, they live exclusively on the island of Madagascar. In recent years, their numbers have been declining due to poaching.
'Ring-tailed lemurs in the Moscow Zoo reproduce regularly. In this way, the Zoo contributes to the conservation of a rare species.'
