Saffron cultivation has seen a rise in Afghanistan, with the war-torn country anticipating a harvest of approximately 50 tonnes of the valuable plant this year, the country's Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock said.

Saffron, locally known as red gold, has been cultivated in 26 out of the country's 34 provinces, with nearly 90 percent harvested in the western Herat province, local television channel TOLOnews reported on Saturday.

Afghanistan's saffron stands out for its exceptional quality and flavor, consistently earning the top position in a global competition hosted by the International Taste Institute based in Belgium for the ninth consecutive year, Sadr Azam Osmani, deputy minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, said.
