This is a DSLR time lapse montage of various Noctilucent Cloud displays captured from the UK over the years. I've been observing these mysterious clouds since 1999. NLCs are fascinating to scientists as their presence can tell us a lot about the upper atmosphere (mesosphere) where they reside and about temperatures and relationship with the solar cycle. These clouds actually come from comet and asteroid dust falling into the atmosphere and getting encased in ice crystals.

They are only seen during the summer months after midnight and known as night shining clouds, their structures can be quite spectacular!. The 2024 NLC has arrived with the first UK sightings over the last week. They could appear on any clear night over June and July.
