Echidna reaches its tongue into container to eat meal
An echidna reached its tongue into a red container to eat its meal.
Footage shows the spiny anteater reaching its long, sticky snout through the small hole to savour its food at the Perth Zoo in Western Australia on June 11.
The zoo said: 'The echidna's specialised tongue was designed for extracting ants and termites from their nests.'
Echidnas are unique egg-laying mammals found in Australia and New Guinea. They are known for their distinctive spiny coat and elongated snout, which they use for feeding.
They also have a long, sticky tongue that can extend up to 18 inches in length. They use this tongue to probe into ant and termite nests and to capture their prey.
