STORYLINE:
Rebeca Grynspan, secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), spoke highly of the China-proposed Global Development Initiative (GDI) in a recent interview with Xinhua.
Grynspan underscored that GDI is conducive to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): REBECA GRYNSPAN, Secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
"I think that (GDI) is an excellent framework that aligns with the mission of the UN, especially in certain areas where the GDI is very strong in green development, is very strong in food security. It's also very strong in infrastructure. That is a very important element for sustainable development, sustainable infrastructure, and not infrastructure at large but infrastructure that will be tailored to the needs of the population to achieve the SDGs. So really we think that the international cooperation has to widen and deepen in the world and GDI is a contribution to that goal that we all need to have."
The UN's trade and development chief also highlighted the long-standing cooperation between China and UNCTAD.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): REBECA GRYNSPAN, Secretary-general of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
"The long-standing collaboration between China and UNCTAD is part of the principle that we believe in open trade, we believe in the contribution of trade and investment to development. And we have learned from China's experience first and we have studied China as a very important example of development in the 20th and 21st centuries, but also we have had a huge collaboration in the imports and exports, for that China holds and also in the global supply chain for that we went precisely last year to attend because that shows China's commitment to open trade. It shows China's commitment also to really make trade in a way that will be inclusive for the whole world. We need to make trade and investment more inclusive, and in that way, more green, more sustainable for achieving the SDGs."
